Potential Side Effects and Risk Management
Even under medical guidance, testosterone therapy can cause side effects that require management:
-
Estrogenic: Aromatization to estrogen can cause water retention, gynecomastia (breast tissue development), and mood swings. An aromatase inhibitor (AI) may be prescribed if needed.
-
Androgenic: Acne, accelerated male pattern baldness, increased body hair.
-
Cardiovascular: Can elevate red blood cell count (polycythemia) and negatively impact cholesterol profiles.
-
Suppressive: Exogenous testosterone shuts down the body’s natural production (the HPTA axis). Post-cycle therapy (PCT) is a concept in performance circles, but in HRT, therapy is often continuous.
-
Organ Stress: Potential impact on liver enzymes and prostate health.
Self-administration without medical oversight drastically increases the likelihood and severity of these side effects.
